Community Service / Zonta International Club of Devonport

Founded in Buffalo, New York State in 1919, Zonta International is a classified, world wide service organisation of executives in business and the professions, working together to advance the status of women.
Zonta International has its office in Chicago with an Executive Director and staff. The International President and International Foundation support international service projects and educational fellowships.

Zonta is divided into Districts with a District Governor and District Board.

These in turn are composed of Areas, with each Area having an Area Director.

District 23 covers Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia with 40 clubs and approximately 850 members.

The Objects of Zonta International

* to provide service at the global and local level
* to improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women
* to work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world of fellowship of executives in business and the professions
* to promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedom
* to be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their community, their nations and the universe.

The Zonta Club of Devonport was chartered in March 1996. Our aims are:

* to promote the objects of Zonta
* to work together to support local and international causes and programs
* to provide mutual support and fellowship for members

Commitments:
* to attend monthly meetings which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 6.00pm, at High Tide Restaurant at Quoiba. The meetings combine business and dinner at a cost of $24. Members are assigned to a Committee which meets prior to the general business, which is dealt with during dinner.

The Committees give Members the opportunity to develop their interests in Women's Affairs and to be actually involved in organising the Club's fellowhip events, writing submissions seeking grants, and organising fundraising events.

Fundraising:
In recent years our major fundraising project has been making packs of miniature Christmas puddings. The proceeds will finance a 'Reflections Seat' to be located on Victoria Parade, Devonport, where people may quietly reflect on issues affecting their lives. We also organise and conduct the Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast in October of each year. Proceeds from this go to the North-West Breast Cancer Council
