What is Zonta International?

Zonta International is a world-wide service organisation of executives in business and the professions working to improve the legal, political, economic, and professional status of women.

There are more than 30,600 Zontians in over 1,200 clubs in 67 countries. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, Zonta takes it name from a Sioux Indian word meaning "to band together for a purpose" and "honest and trustworthy".

CLUB PROJECTS:

The Zonta Club of Launceston is proud of its ongoing support for various projects both locally and internationally. Our club projects support the Launceston Women's Shelter and include a Dental Assistant scholarship in association with The Royal Flying Doctor Society. We provide an annual Young Women's Achievement Award and also an annual achievement award to each senior secondary school in Launceston.
Each year the Club participates in the packaging and distribution of thousands of birthing kits which are sent to countries such as Zambia, Thailand, New Guinea where post natal facilities are extremely limited. This project is also sponsored by AusAid.

INGTERNATIONAL PROJECTS:

Zonta International works closely with other agencies such as UNIFEM , funding projects in many countries that serve to eradicate violence against women and children and improve women's status and well being. Examples of these projects are

* Zonta/UNIFEM - Community-based centre for housing and
rehabilitation of women victims of violence in Syria

* Zonta/UNFPA Reduction of Obstetric Fistula in Liberia

* Zonta/UNIFEM Safe Cities for Women Project in Guatemala City and
San Salvador

* Zonta/UNIFEM Ending Violence against women through
community action in Cambodia

* Jane Klausman Women in Business Scholarships

* Amelia Earhart Fellowship provides funds to women to study
aerospace-related sciences and engineering.

COSTS INVOLVED IN MEMBERSHIP:

The annual subscription varies from club to club and covers the international, district, and club dues. Our current subscription is $105 per annum with a additional one off international joining fee of $25. Ongoing expenses include monthly dinner meeting, and any fund raising projects within the club for local and international service.

CLUB MEETINGS:

The Zonta Club of Launceston Inc. meets on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) 6.00pm for 6.30pm dinner. Phone or email for venue. Visiting Zontians are welcome to attend meetings and should contact Carol Fuller telephone (03) 63311558.


COMMITTEE MEETINGS:

Working committees include:

Fellowship, Membership, Service and Status of Women/United Nations.

Members join committees according to their personal interests. Meetings are arranged by committee convenors and are held in private homes, providing an opportunity for fellowship.


Zonta offers you as a member:

- self development through office holding and workshops
- service to your local and international community
- networking via other clubs, area workshops, district
conferences, and international conventions
- opportunities to promote and further the status of women, both
locally and globally

HOW TO JOIN:

Make contact (0363311558) to be invited to the next scheduled meeting where you will meet members and learn about current projects and events. Members join because they are eager to help other women not only locally but also internationally.
Prospective members are invited to attend several of our regular monthly meetings before joining.

Members are expected to regularly attend monthly dinner meetings, on the first Tuesday of the month, as well as committee meetings as arranged by committee convenors and to support fundraising and service activities.
