Emergency Service / Public Safety / Safety House Association of Tasmania INC

Safety Houses provide assistance to anyone in the community should they feel unsafe, threatened or unsure. The program also aims to play a preventative role in community safety, providing safer neighbourhoods for everyone.

The Tasmanian Safety House program commenced in 1984. It was first launched at Norwood Primary School in Launceston. There are now 75 community committees and schools participating in the scheme around Tasmania. Around Australia there are over 300,000 Safety Houses. With the introduction of a national logo the community is able to clearly recognise the sign as representing a place of safety.

Safety Houses are not just for young children:

The Safety House scheme can be used by young people, adults and older people as well as children. Every age group needs to know that someone will help them if they feel unsafe, threatened or unwell. Look for the Safety House sign on letterboxes or the front window of businesses in your community. When you ask for help at a Safety House the resident or reception staff in a business will telephone 000 to report the circumstances. If the matter is serious a police car will be dispatched to deal with your problem.

Some Other Strategies to Keep You Safe:

• Be aware of potentially dangerous situations such as a car or
person following you.
• Go to a shop, chemist, milk bar or call out to a passer-by if no
Safety Houses are available and you need assistance.
• Try to avoid walking alone – plan your trips to the shops or
school so that you go with a friend or family member.

You should also know...

Residents in a Safety House or employees in a Safety House business, must meet certain criteria before their house can become a Safety House. These include having a telephone, regular adult presence and a clear pathway to the front door. In addition to these, the applicants must undergo a police record check and are interviewed by the local Safety House committee.

You can become involved in the Safety House Scheme by;

• Becoming a Safety House Householder,
• Joining your local committee,
• assisting with fundraising,
• Helping to monitor the Safety Houses in your area.
