The operation of the Society is a non-profit venture dedicated to the ideals listed in the following statement of aims:
- Establishing at Evandale a senic track for use by steam enthusiasts.
- Providing a venue at Evandale suitable for community and charitable fund raising.
- Fostering skills in design, building and safe operation of steam powered equipment.
- Promoting fellowship among members and kindred societies.
- Fostering a public awareness of our Tasmanian steam heritage.
Work at the site began in November 1986. The society now have completed steaming bays, loading ramps, turntable, platforms, signal lights, station building, engine shed, storage shed and signal box plus have laid over 580 metres of 7 1/4" and 5" ground level track and 180 meteres of elevated 5" and 3 1/4" track. Our society is primarily concerned with encouraging the hobby of model steam engineering by providing help from a growing body of experienced engineers and also providing its membership with a most attractive and well appointed site for train operation.
One of the ELRSS aims is to support the community by helping service groups and charities. Funds raised from ticket sales to Railex are used to further develop our site, which in turn allows our membership and the facility to be used to return something to the community.
