Arts & Leisure / Launceston Art Society

http://www.art.org.au/society/index.htm
The Launceston Art Society is the oldest continuous art society in Australia and it has played an important role in the North of Tasmania since it's establishment in 1891. Originally it commenced as the Launceston Drawing Club, by a number of young ladies resident in Launceston who met on a regular basis to sketch and paint. Many well known Australian artists have joined the society and there were 200 members in 2006.

In 1901 the Duke and Duchess of York were presented in Hobart with an album of sketches compiled by artists from the Launcston and Hobart art societies. Dame Nellie Melba in 1927 opened an exhibition of early Tasmanian art organised by the Launceston Art Society.

Over a period of two years the society raised sufficient funds to restore John Glovers grave at Deddington.

In 1938 a notable exhibition was held by Victorian and Tasmanian artists combining their individual talents. Some of Australias most celebrated artists have exhibited with the society and are represented in State and Regional Art Galleries.

Workshops are conducted twice a year with well known mainland and Tasmanian artists. International artists like Robert Wade and Joseph Zbukvic and other well known artists Ev Hale, Des Murray and Leonie Duff have conducted some of these LAS sponsored workshops.

Members meet socially at the Scout Hall, St Georges Square every Tuesday morning from 10 -12.30pm and at Gill Waddles studio at Evandale 10.30 - 3.30pm on the last Monday of the month except December and January.

An Exhibition of members works is held each year with various categories for prizes offered. Students are encouraged to exhibit as well.

Each year an end of year Christmas dinner and social get together is enjoyed by many of our members.
