Arts & Leisure / St Helens Garden Club

http://www.sthelens.tco.asn.au/community/garden/files/index.htm
On March 15th 1966, "A public meeting was convened by the Rev. R.N. Fox in the Parish Hall to discuss and take action if suggested to form a Garden Club".
Thus, the Portland Garden Club's first meeting was organised and held on April 17th 1966, with thirty members.

With membership increasing each month, the climax to the first year's work came at their Autumn Show held on the 10th February 1967 when other organisations of the district combined with them to make it a financial success. The resultant proceeds were donated to Medea Park Home for the Aged.

Since it's origin, the Garden Club has donated monies back into the community, The Governor's Fire Appeal (financially as well as 20 boxes of cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, etc.,), and regular donations to Medea Park were worthy recipients in the early years.

In later years to the present day, The Royal Flying Doctor, The Community Bus, St. Helens Hospital Fund Raising Appeal and the Local Physiotherapist (for equipment used within the Community), have all benefited from the Club's regular and worthy donations.

At a General Meeting held on the 16th March 1993, a change of name from 'Portland Garden Club' to 'St. Helens Garden Club' was made.

The St Helens Garden Club have their monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Portland Community Hall Cecilia Street, St Helens. Three trips a year are organised by the Garden Club, visiting gardens and/or nursery centres.

Talks are given by guest speakers at their monthly meetings, and, with their monthly competitions and the full support of the Garden Club members in many forms, and with regular donations returning to the community, established the club into a very productive, strong and worthwhile institution.

Visitors and new Members are most welcome.
