Fifteen District Health Forums were established by the State Government in 1991, their role being to give local communities a voice in health planning. Each forum comprised 15-20 members who had a genuine interest in the health and wellbeing of their communities. In 1996, an internal review renamed the forums to District Community & Health Forums, to reflect the wider range of services provided by the Department.
In 1999, a further review recommended that the forums be abolished and replaced by 12 Community Consultation Groups (CCG). Under this system, the Northern Midlands would be part of Central Tasmania CCG, along with the Southern Midlands, Central Highlands & New Norfolk - a huge area. Forum members statewide rejected the proposed model, which has yet to be established.
The former Northern Midlands forum members decided to form an unofficial group - the Northern Midlands Community & Health Interest Group - which continues to listen to local concerns. We may not have any teeth, but we will still pursue local issues and report to the Department of Health & Human Services when necessary. The DHHS has acknowledged the role of our group, which has been allocated a representative on the Campbell Town Community Service.
The Northern Midlands Community & Health Forum took up many local issues and had considerable success in several important areas, such as:
· Breast Screen visits to Campbell Town.
· formation of Campbell Town Task Force, which resulted in application for Multi-Purpose Service.
· formation of group to look into problems of drug & alcohol abuse (particularly among young people), later taken on as a project, by Rotary.
· promotion of health issues at local shows.
· involvement in securing GP for Campbell Town.
· involvement with changes at Toosey Hospital.
· PLUS looking into a range of health & community concerns, brought up by individuals in the Municipality.
