Local History / Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society Inc

http://www.dvr.org.au
The Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society Inc was formed in 1990 and purchased the assets of the Tasmanian Locomotive Company, which had for some years been operating excursion trains on the scenic Derwent Valley Line. Initially operating out of the Hobart suburb of Claremont, the Society later established its operating base at New Norfolk, 38 km northwest of Hobart, and continued operating passenger trains on the line to Maydena. When the Derwent Valley Line was closed beyond New Norfolk in 1995, the Society operated to other destinations, before eventually re-opening the line to Hayes (5 km from New Norfolk) in 1999, and then to Westerway (31 km) in 2000. Work on re-opening the line to National Park (37km from New Norfolk) is continuing and is expected to be completed in 2003.
The Society is a volunteer non-profit organisation which is dedicated to the restoration of the Derwent Valley Line from New Norfolk to Maydena.
Membership is available for $33 per year for adults, $16.50 per year for students, and $44 for families.
Have you ever thought that you might like to work on a railway? We offer the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of tasks related to train operations. Opportunities are available for members to participate in a variety of tasks.
The Society needs volunteers for many essential tasks including:
· Locomotive and rolling stock restoration and maintenance
· On train crew and station staff
· Locomotive drivers and firemen
· Road crossing attendants
· Track and other line maintenance
