Members come from many walks of life and have a variety of professional interests. They value the opportunity to meet, hear and talk with specialists beyond their own professional field. At present membership totals about 400, in Tasmania, other Australian states and overseas. Membership fees are modest.
The Society is based in Hobart, with the Northern Branch centred in Launceston.
The Society has a number of important functions in addition to its regular programme of lectures and excursions:
* publishes a scholarly intrernational scientific journal, which is exchanged with many libraries overseas - 'The Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania'
* supports a bursary scheme for Tasmanian year 12 students chosen to represent Australia at international science Olympiads and other similar events
* awards medals and recognises high scholastic and other achievements in the community, including a new doctoral award
* owns a valuable library of mostly scientific journals and books housed at the library of the University of Tasmania
* nominates two trustees to the Board of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and one to the Board of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, both organisations originally started by the Royal Society
* maintains very close links with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery which houses and curates many works of art owned by the Royal society
The original Royal Society of London was initiated in the 17th century (1660) to help foster the development of science (the new 'experimental philosophy'). The Royal Society of Tasmania was started in the colony in 1843 and is the oldest scientific society in Australia and New Zealand and the oldest Royal Society outside Great Britain.
