The Asthma Foundation of Tasmania is a community-funded organisation, which provides asthma education, certified training, counselling and support services to people with asthma, their families, carers and the community.
We work with all socio-economic groups ranging from infants to the elderly.
We have two full-time educators that provide education across the state. We offer training in emergency asthma management (EAM) as a fee paying course to professionals and the general public. - Learn how to save a life today for $40 for 3hr training.
The Foundation is governed by a Committee of Management, which meets monthly.
Activities undertaken by educators include:
Personal consultations/counselling, office appointments
Telephone information (freecall 1800 645 130)
Provision of asthma information in brochures, fact sheets and at www.asthmatas.org.au
Hospital discharge follow up
Asthma equipment sales
Multidisciplinary pulmonary rehab program (NW)
We assists Lung Net support groups (for people with chronic lung disease) in each region
Advocacy on behalf of people with asthma and their carers
Raising funds through raffles and events
Asthma week health promotion activities
Community education and information sessions
EAM training
Programs offering asthma education for specific areas
Asthma Friendly Schools Program, targets students, teachers, parents/carers
Asthma education for Childcare providers
Pharmacy Partners, providing information to pharmacy staff and their clients
Asthma information for Aged Care providers and their clients
Easier Breathing program (pulmonary rehab. for those with chronic lung disease)
Community support for the Asthma 3+ Visit plan which is offered by GPs
Major Achievements of the Foundation
Success in fund submission to the state government
Formation of an alliance with Aurora Energy to increase our education service
Funding of services with volunteer contribution
Responsible for increasing public awareness of asthma management
Funding of minor research projects for asthma
Ongoing support/education for general practitioners, teachers, allied health, childcare providers etc.
Assisting the reduction of re-admissions to hospital due to asthma
