The Beaconsfield area was first explored in 1804 by Lt-Col William Paterson who established a settlement at nearby York Town. York Town lays claim to being the first declared permanent settlement in the north of Tasmania. After a few winters, it was decided to move the settlement south to "Richings Park" now called Launceston. Although Launceston become the principle settlement in the north, Patterson continued to live at York Town until 1808.
The town of Beaconsfield originally named "Cabbage Tree Hill" was settled in 1850's, and named Beaconsfield in 1879 by Governor F A Weld in honour of the Earl of Beaconsfield, the British statesman Benjamin Disraeli.
