Community History[ add a new story ]

The northeast of Tasmania was opened by by the discovery of tin at Derby and surrounds. The Briseis Mine was one of the richest in the southern hemisphere in the late 1890's. The mine was flooded in 1929 with the loss of 14 lives. Other towns and regions have amazing history.

The Briseis Lake
The Briseis Tin Mine 1878, was named after the 1876 Melbourne Cup winner and became the richest tin mine in the northeast. There was a population of about 3000 in the district in the late 19th century.
On April 1929, the Cascade Dam broke and the town and the mine were flooded. Fourteen people died and the mine, the largest and deepest hydraulic tin mine in the southern hemisphere.

The Dam Failure
It was my understanding that the mine did reopen in 1934 and operated till 1948, but never achieved its previous level of success.....

I believe that this is true.
