The D'Entrecasteux Channel region has a rich heritage of Aborigial culture, farming, fishing and fruit growing.

Tramway Hill Reserve
Tramway Hill Reserve, an area of almost 7 hectares, is located in the hills just west of Margate central, and is accessible via Tabors Road, which is off Nierinna Road.

Tramway Hill Landcare Group is regenerating the reserve and the history of the hill is interesting. It originates from the time when a tramway was built in 1906 to service the Wallsend Colliery further west at Kaoota. The track was 12 miles (20kms) long with a 610 millimeters gauge, and ended at the North West Bay jetty in Margate. As well as carrying coal, the tram also carried timber, produce and passengers from the small settlement of Kaoota. The jetty was about 80 meters long, and could service ships drawing 7 metres.
