Community Overview
Sorell is a diverse community 24 kilometres south-east of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. With a regional population of over 15,000 people, Sorell is the fastest growing community in Tasmania. It is just 10 minutes from Hobart Airport and 20 minutes from Hobart City making it an ideal commuter distance to the capital city.
The Municipality of Sorell includes Midway Point and extends south-east to encompass a number of towns including Dodges Ferry, Lewisham, Carlton, Primrose Sands, Forcett, Copping and Dunalley. The region has a diverse range of farm and marine produce and small industries. These have largely replaced agriculture which was once the region's mainstay as Sorell and the surrounding district was originally a major granary of the colony.
Tourism is becoming the area's main focus with Sorell being the hub town and gateway to the East coast. Sorell offers a diverse range of accommodation including popular bed and breakfasts. There are a varied range of eateries available in the town. With its agricultural heritage visitors are still able to partake of the fresh produce available from fruit farms and the vegetable markets within the district.
There is a bustling shopping centre which includes bakeries, supermarkets and hotels. Some of the Government services available in Sorell are Service Tasmania, Centrelink, a Medical Centre, the new Visitor Tourist Information Centre and Sorell School.
