MARGATE
Dru Point Bicentennial Park
Dru Point Bicentennial Park, overlooking North West Bay, is about two kilometres from the Margate shops. Great views of North West Bay and Mt Wellington. Peaceful and quiet and a good place for a picnic or a barbeque. Sheltered tables and benches are available, so bring your own food or buy a pie at the local bakery.
Food, glorious food
We have to get our priorities right and, as we all eat daily, here are two places in Margate where an enjoyable repast could be called a fatal attraction.
The Morning Star Cafe on the Channel Highway right in Margate, offers light meals, coffee, tea and cakes. Peruse local handcrafted items under the roof of the former appleshed and buy a souvenir here.
The Pancake Train". Thats right, you can enjoy a pancake of your choice, or a steaming bowl of snert (during winter months), and at the same time, a beautiful view of North West Bay. The venue is also licensed for bottled wines. Before or after lunch, browse the antique shops at the train. What, you ask is snert? Well, call in and find out!
Merediths Orchard
Robin Merediths fruit and vegetable market is just south of Margate and has a connection to the area back to 1834. His great, great grandfather was granted 200 acres in 1834 about a kilometre from the present shop after retiring from the army as a lieutenant, and became a farmer. Since then the Merediths family tradition has been to become orchardists, but after the decline of apple exports in the 1970s, Robin's father opened a roadside stall selling the fruit to make a living and support his family. Since then all sorts of fresh produce has been added, as well as a small range of grocery items.
It is interesting that before the decline in apple exports, there were about 1200 orchardists in Tasmania, now there is only about 200, although the size of the average commercial orchard, has grown.
